Electrical plan software: why Australian sparkies are ditching paper markups
10 August 2026 · 6 min read · robot® Plan
Walk most new builds in Australia and the electrical plan is still a builder's PDF with highlighter on it. It works — right up until the customer asks to move three downlights, add a switch and "see what it looks like", and you're re-printing, re-marking and re-explaining.
Electrical plan software replaces the highlighter with an interactive floor plan: drop the builder's plan in, place downlights, switches, powerpoints, LED strips and data points on it, and share a live link the customer can open on their phone. Change something and everyone's looking at the same version — no version-17-final-FINAL.pdf.
What good electrical plan software should do
Having built one (robot® Plan) and talked to a few hundred sparkies while doing it, this is the honest checklist:
- Work on the plans you already get. If it needs CAD files, it's for engineers, not electricians. A PDF or a photo of the builder's plan should be enough.
- Place real products, not generic symbols. A switch on the plan should know it's a 4-gang with two dimmable circuits — because that's what ends up on the bill of materials.
- Count everything for you. The plan should produce the materials list. Counting downlights off a printout at 9pm is how items get missed and margin disappears.
- Turn into a quote. The distance between "plan the customer loves" and "quote the customer signs" should be one button, at your rates.
- Be shareable without an app. Customers won't install anything. A link that opens in the browser, looks sharp on a phone, and shows their actual house wins jobs.
What it changes commercially
The visual plan does the upsell for you. When a customer can see their alfresco with LED strip lighting on their own floor plan, "add the strip lighting" stops being a line item and becomes something they can picture. Sparkies using interactive plans consistently report bigger average jobs, because the customer engages with the design instead of scanning a list of prices for the cheapest number to argue with.
It also kills the quiet killer: re-quoting. When the plan is the source of truth, a change is a two-minute edit and an updated link — not a new site visit.
