LED strip lighting: where it belongs in a home (and how to plan it)

LED strip is the layer that makes a finished home photograph like a display home — and the item most often value-managed out because nobody planned it, so it arrived as a scary variation. Plan it early and it's cheap; improvise it late and it's a call-back.
Where it earns its keep
- Under kitchen overheads. The classic, because it's task lighting that looks like feature lighting. Warm white, on its own switch, always dimmed.
- Under the island bench. The floating-island glow. This one's pure theatre — and it's the line item customers point at in the plan and say yes to.
- Alfresco ceiling perimeter. The resort effect. A recessed shadow-line channel around the alfresco reads as architecture, not decoration.
- Stairs and hall niches. Low-level strip on a sensor: midnight navigation without waking the house.
- Bulkheads and coffered ceilings. Up-light the recess and the ceiling floats.
The three specs that matter
Colour temperature: 2700–3000 K everywhere indoors; save cool white for garages. Brightness: around 10 W/m for feature runs, 14 W+ for task; always dimmable, because full brightness is for cleaning day only. IP rating: IP65+ outside and in kickers where mops live.
The bit everyone underestimates: transformers
Every run needs LED driver capacity with ~20% headroom, a home for that driver where it can breathe and be reached, and a feed from the switching circuit. This is exactly the arithmetic that goes wrong on a paper markup — and it's why the robot Plan designer calculates transformer requirements automatically as you draw each strip run: length in, wattage and driver on the materials list, nothing forgotten at rough-in.
