Electrical takeoff software: counting the job from the plan, not the site walk

5 August 2026 · 5 min read · robot® Plan

A takeoff is just counting: how many downlights, switches, GPOs, data points and cameras live on this plan, and what does that cost to supply and install. Commercial estimators have had takeoff software for decades. Residential sparkies mostly still count highlighter dots — and every miscount comes straight out of margin.

What takeoff software actually does

You load the builder's floor plan and place each point on it. The software keeps the running count per item, applies your supply-and-install rates, and produces the bill of materials and the quote. The plan and the price can never disagree, because they're the same document.

What to look for (residential edition)

  • Works from PDFs and photos — the plans you actually receive, not DWG exports you don't.
  • Knows real products. A 4-gang switch with two dimmers should hit the count as exactly that, with the dimmer modules and plates it implies — not as a generic dot you re-interpret later.
  • Handles the induced items. LED strip implies drivers; cameras imply an NVR and a switch port. Good software counts the things the symbols drag along with them.
  • Your rates, your part numbers. Import your pricing library once (CSV from anywhere, Simpro exports included) and every takeoff prices itself at YOUR margin.
  • The takeoff IS the quote. One button from counted plan to itemised, sendable, signable quote — that's the whole point.

The bonus residential twist

In a house, the takeoff document doubles as the sales document. The same marked-up plan that counts your materials is the picture the customer falls in love with — which is why an interactive plan out-sells a spreadsheet takeoff every time, at the same price.

robot Plan does the count, the pricing and the customer-facing plan in one pass — free for 30 days, first takeoff done in about twenty minutes.
