How to set up switches, gangs and 2-way switching
Name each switch, pick the plate and gangs, set what each gang does, mark dimmers and 2-way or 3-way groups, and link switches to their lights.
Get the switches right on the plan and the switch schedule writes itself — for you, your apprentice and the customer.
Place a switch
- 1In Add Products → Powerpoints & switches, pick Light switch.
- 2Tap the plan where it goes.
- 3Tap the switch, then the i (Details) button to open its settings.
A new switch shows red until you name it. Naming it clears the red.
Switch settings
Tap Done to save, or Delete switch to remove it.
- Switch name — where it is, e.g. Kitchen entry. This is how it’s listed in the switch schedule.
- Plate finish — e.g. Vivid White or Black, where the range has more than one.
- Gangs — 1 to 6.
- Smart switch — tap to make it smart. It’s marked SMART on the plan and the take-off.
- Height mm — 1100, 1300, 1500 or type your own.
What does each gang do?
Each gang gets its own line. Type what it controls, e.g. Kitchen pendants. Then tick what applies:
- Dimmable — that gang is a dimmer. robot adds the dimmer to the product list for you, so there’s no separate dimmer to place.
- 2 way — this gang is one of two switches controlling the same lights.
- 3 way — three or more switch positions. You’ll need an intermediate mech.
Tap the ⓘ next to the ticks for a quick refresher on 2-way & 3-way switching.
Group 2-way and 3-way switches
- 1On the first switch, name the gang (e.g. Hallway lights) and tick 2 way.
- 2On the second switch, tick 2 way on the matching gang.
- 3Instead of a name box you’ll see Switch group…. Pick the group from the first switch.
- 4Both switches now show as a pair in the switch schedule — 2-way with the other switch.
If the dropdown says No 2-way groups yet, name a gang on another switch and tick 2 way on it first.
Link switches to lights
To undo a link, tap the ✕ on the line (Remove this link). Turn the lines on or off with Filter → Switch links.
- 1Tap the switch.
- 2Tap the chain button (Link lights).
- 3Tap each light or LED strip that switch controls. A line joins them.
- 4Tap an empty part of the plan to finish.
The switch schedule
Every switch is listed in the switch schedule with its plate, gangs, height and what each gang does. It prints in the Product list download and, if you tick it, on the summary page of the Plan PDF. Unnamed switches show as Unnamed switch, so name them before you send.
